Joining capability

Weld process, fixture, finish, and inspection planned as one system

The correct welding route depends on alloy, thickness, joint design, access, strength, heat input, and the required cosmetic finish.

Capability Fabex scope Engineering checkpoint
Processes and qualifications MIG, TIG, and spot welding selected per joint requirement Publish qualification claims only with the applicable standard and scope.
Assembly envelope Reviewed with fixture, torch, inspection, and finishing access Large size is only useful when every joint and inspection point remains accessible.
Distortion control Joint design, balanced sequence, controlled heat input, fixturing, and intermediate checks The plan is matched to flatness, squareness, gap, and interface requirements.
Cosmetic weld finish Visible surfaces and grinding limits agreed on the drawing Over-grinding can reduce strength or distort thin material, so finish expectations must be explicit.
Weld inspection Method and acceptance criteria set by joint risk The drawing or specification should define acceptance criteria, not only the inspection method.

Weld control

Control fit-up before heat makes defects expensive

Good weld quality starts with part accuracy, joint preparation, access, and a repeatable fixture.

1

Joint and callout review

Confirm joint type, weld size and length, intermittent or continuous pattern, access, appearance, and applicable acceptance criteria.

Checkpoint

Ambiguous weld symbols resolved before fabrication.

2

Fixture and sequence plan

Establish datums, fit-up gaps, tack sequence, heat balance, and checkpoints for distortion-sensitive features.

Checkpoint

Assembly can be loaded, welded, and measured repeatably.

3

Welding and intermediate checks

Control fit-up and sequence while checking interfaces before they become inaccessible.

Checkpoint

Critical dimensions contained before final welding or grinding.

4

Finish and inspection

Apply only the specified grinding or blending, then perform dimensional and weld acceptance checks.

Checkpoint

Finished assembly released against drawing and agreed standard.

What changes your quoted cost

  • Joint length and access
  • Fixture complexity
  • Heat-sensitive tolerances
  • Cosmetic grinding and blending
  • Inspection method and documentation
  • Material thickness and weld process

Application

Drawing-defined sheet metal parts and assemblies

Material

Drawing-specified material and thickness

Quantity

Lead time

Typical production challenge

A thin-sheet assembly required controlled mounting interfaces and a consistent visible weld finish.

Approach

Review joint callouts, establish fixture datums and sequence, inspect before finishing, and verify final assembly interfaces.

What you receive before release

Documented DFM findings, a proposed manufacturing route, quotation, and lead-time plan for your approval.

Welding questions

Sheet metal welding FAQs

Answers about process selection, distortion, appearance, and inspection.

How do you choose between MIG, TIG, and spot welding?+

Selection depends on alloy, thickness, joint type, access, strength, appearance, production rate, and whether the joint must be continuous. A drawing review identifies the practical route.

How should cosmetic weld requirements be specified?+

Mark visible zones, required profile, grinding or blending limits, finish direction, coating, and an approved appearance sample where possible. Terms such as “smooth” are too subjective by themselves.

How is welding distortion reduced?+

Useful controls include accurate fit-up, balanced joint design, fixtures, tack strategy, controlled sequence and heat input, intermittent welds where allowed, and intermediate dimensional checks.

Can welded assemblies be leak tested?+

Leak testing may be possible, but the medium, pressure or vacuum, duration, allowable leakage, port design, safety requirements, and reporting must be specified during quotation.

What weld inspection records can accompany an order?+

Available records depend on the process and requirement. Define the applicable standard, acceptance criteria, sampling or full-inspection need, and required report format before the quote is finalized.

Should the drawing include weld symbols and an acceptance standard?+

Yes. Identify joint type, weld size and length, intermittent spacing, side, contour, finish, and the applicable acceptance criteria. Clear symbols prevent the shop from interpreting vague notes such as “weld all around” differently from the designer.

Weldment DFM

Reduce fixture complexity and heat distortion

Joint geometry should locate the parts, allow welding access and keep heat away from critical cosmetic or dimensional features.

01

Self-location

Use tabs and slots where appropriate so parts locate consistently before tack welding.

02

Tool access

Check perpendicular access for weld torches, spot-weld tips, clamps and post-weld finishing tools.

03

Heat strategy

Balance weld length and sequence; add stiffness or temporary restraint where large panels may oil-can.

Customer Perspective

Trust is earned in the next order

B2B customers often give brief, practical feedback and show their trust through the next project.

Trust shown through repeat work

In contract manufacturing, the clearest reward is often another drawing, another production order, or a larger scope.

We do not publish a customer's name, product, drawing or project details without written permission. That is not a lack of proof - it is how contract manufacturing works, and it is the same discretion we apply to your designs.
